It all starts with the Journey to the Centre of the Earth, in the middle of the Atlantic, a space of contemplation and introspection sheltered from the saltiness of the ocean in between volcanic rock labyrinths, exotic vegetation and a vineyard within a demarcated region. The construction is located in protected landscape of Pico Island, in the Azores archipelago, in the village of São João. The house is near Arruda Bay, as well as several bathing areas of peculiar geology from the last eruption in 1718, an artisanal cheese dairy, a minimarket, public transportation and two parking spaces. Accessible by a typical volcanic rock stairway which winds and interconnects in depth all the vineyard’s terraces with the ocean. The island is like a boat, it even has its shape, sailing aimlessly and without destination, as if of its own accord. The house, on the other hand, is more like a cockpit, a stage for man’s carelessness in the face of this situation.

Tudo começa com a Viagem para o centro do Mundo, em pleno Atlântico, um espaço de contemplação e introspecção protegido da salsugem do Oceano por entre labirintos de pedra vulcânica, vinha em solo crú e exótica vegetação. A construção localiza-se em paisagem protegida da Ilha do Pico, arquipélago dos Açores, na povoação de São João. A Adega está próxima da Baía da Arruda bem como de diversas zonas balneares de geologia particular proveniente da última erupção em 1718, queijaria artesanal, minimercado, transportes públicos e dois lugares de estacionamento. Acessível por uma típica escadaria em pedra vulcânica, que serpenteia e interliga em toda a profundidade as plataformas do terroir de vinha com o Oceano. A Ilha é como um barco, tem até a sua forma, navegando sem rumo e destino como que por vontade própria. Já a casa é mais como um cockpit, um palco para o desazo do Homem perante esta situação.

Alles beginnt mit einem Ausflug in den Atlantik ins Zentrum der Welt, einem Ort der Besinnung, geschützt gegen die Salzigkeit des Ozeans zwischen vulkanischen Steinlabyrinthen, Weinbergen in rohem Boden und exotischer Vegetation.
Der Bau befindet sich auf einer geschützten Landschaft im Dorf São João, auf der Insel Pico im Azoren-Archipel und ist über eine typische Vulkansteintreppe erreichbar, die den Ozean in der Tiefe des Terroirs verbindet. In der Nähe befinden sich mehrere Badegebiete und gute Angelplätze mit besonderer Geologie aus der letzten Eruption im Jahre 1718 sowie eine Käserei, ein Minimarkt, eine Bushaltestelle und zwei Parkplätze. Die Insel ist beinahe wie ein Boot, sie hat auch dessen Form, welches ziellos und ohne Schicksal aus eigenem Antrieb dahinsegelt. Das Haus ist dazu wie ein Cockpit, eine Bühne für die Hilflosigkeit des Mannes im Hinblick auf diese Situation.
